Sounds like the rope was *beep* in the first place, as a T5 doesn't weigh 5ton.

the rope was fine surprisngly, this kite was owned by a kite shop and is flow regularly the T5 was the final point of the anchor system. might have been a snatch load that bust the line but the van had moved a small amount. The big trilobyte was the kite on the end

Wow thats quite a kite.  Don't see them like that on the beach very often!
Am sure your knots are perfectly safe, but in my opinion i'd rather think about all the other things which could go wrong during a recovery than whether the rope is going to break.
Pre-warned is pre-armed!
Wayne - We use chains at work, as well as the odd steel hawzer, but they have no give, so the shock loads are transfered both ways.  Its especially difficult with a 4x4 to see when the rope is under tension without it snapping tight, could be quite a jolt with a wire.  Not to mention the risks when handling it, the wires fray and stick out of the rope.  Should always handle wire using gloves.
Sorry to go on about it but have seen the damage recoveries going wrong can cause to both people and vehicles.  Would hate it if i had sat back and said nothing...  After all, we all want to have fun, it's what going off road is all about.

guess it depends your useage, whether it be off road or just for on road emergencies,my personal favourite is a length of scaffold tube with a towhitch on 1 end and a hefty shackle on the other,a home built special and it works perfectly

I've got a 5 metre nylon rope and a couple of kinetics, need a bridle for the back to go between the 2 new shackles, after the broken chassis i will NEVER leave my kinetic anywhere but in the truck!!!!

Careful with a soild bar... there's no give, no spring, and no forgiveness... Brilliant for towing though... I'd personally not use a bar for recovery but I'm also not to hot on the potential damage of kinetics... and humm... it was my strop which pulled garys cross member off, so possibly not to keen on those...

Humm

Don't get stuck - there's a safe recovery Wink
