just wondering how you owners of the 3.0 trooper start up in the morning .

just re-read my owners booklet and it states that you should depress and hold down both the clutch and throttle peddles before cranking the engine ..

does that sound like good advice , is it worth bothering and why .

thanks

Mine's auto so I can't oblige with the clutch, but I have an aversion to starting a cold engine on full throttle.......!

I just crank it with no throttle and it fires up idling, which I am sure is kinder to bottom end, camshafts and turbo bearings. Unless it's winter temperature I don't even bother to wait for the heater plugs because it takes a few seconds to get up pressure in the injector rail anyway and that seems to be enough for the plugs to heat up. In the winter I give it a few seconds heating but still no throttle. I've no idea why they say to floor the throttle.......

I always depress the clutch too, always have, seems to make sense to me, less to churn over.

i always push the throttle right to the floor when cranking and then let it up just as it fires, i find it always starts better

Couldn't agree more - no oil pressure in the block when cranking so reving an engine which has just started is a very bad idea, unless you've a sump in the head (rover 214's with the honda engine Wink )

do they turn over alot then? is it because the oil has to be thin enough and under presher to sort the injectors?

Cranking it on full throttle isnt a problem, the 3.0 wont start unless the oil pressure is up, also as rallymarshall says, its just to start it you dont rev the tatas off it as it fires  Wink

What I do find funny is people pumping the throttle on a diesel before they start it  Laughing

I dip clutch but that is purely because I once forgot to check on an earlier car whether it was in gear or not  Embarassed

No, but actually it is best practise to declutch when starting because the starter then doesn't have to churn a stiff, cold gearbox and, of course, it does take care of the accidental left-it-in-gear kangaroo jump!
