As it looks like the box on my 2.8 Frontera is gonna have to come out, gonna get rid of the dual mass flywheel and fit a Trooper one.

I know the 2.8 Trooper flywheel will fit but have seen a few posts that suggest the Trooper 3.1 and 2.8 flywheels are interchangeable, anyone know for sure Question

No they are not identical

I have a 2.8 and 3.1 solid flywheel in my garage

diameter and fitting are the same 8 bolt holes etc

the only difference is where the clutch plate fits

the 3.1 is machined out more to take a 250mm plate

the 2.8 is only machined to take a 240mm plate

the frontera 2.8 flywheel is identical to the dual mass fitted to the 3.0 DOHC TDI trooper.

If you are converting a dual mass flywheel off a frontera to solid flywheel it is easy

Fit either a 2.8 / 3.1 solid fly

Throw away the alloy gearbox spacer

shorten  the rear frontera solid prop by 2 inches

use a trooper 2.8 front axle or a frontera 2.3/2.4 front axle.

dont forget the gearbox wont fit unless you remove the two locating pins on the top of the engine they are locaters for the adapter plate.

Ok I have a 2.8 clutch on a 3.1 lump but a 2.8 fly.

All the fixings are the same and they look identical but you say the 3.1 fly has a 10mm bigger surface? Are you sure? the 2.8 fly may have been big enough to take the bigger 3.1 clutch...Only 5mm a side so to speak.

????????

The car should already have a 3.1 gearbox because it is a 2.8 Frontera not a Trooper. The 3.1 flywheel should match perfectly with the engine and gearbox in the car, alternatively just fit a 2.8 flywheel with a 2.8 clutch.

Why talk about changing axles?

If the gearbox is knackered simply change it for a 3.1 gearbox there is no need to do anything to the axles.

Having done quite a few Frontera and Trooper transplants, I think you may be confusing leaf & coil sprung Fronteras which use different axle pinion protrusions, different gearboxes and different propshaft lengths. There are also differences between long and short wheelbases and not just propshaft lengths!

I'm getting confused on this post.

Do the 3.1 2.8 and 2.8 frontera have the same box?

3.1 Trooper and 2.8 Frontera NOT 2.8 Trooper.

You Chris, out of anyone, being a Muman, should know that a 2.8 Frontera is virtually a 3.1 Trooper Wink

So what's the difference between the 2.8 trooper and 3.1 trooper box?

Hasn't Matt got a 3.1 on a 2.8 box?
