i am going to have a gess as there is not much info supplied in the question!
so hear goes Laughing
i would look at the fuel first. if there is a leak on the pump or fuel filter that is letting the air in slowly over night the motor will spinn over and over and just be drawing air and no fuel. the second time he trys to start it most of the air will be out of the lines, fuel comes through and bobs ya uncle, she fires up.
can you give us any more info that may help to diagnose your mates problem?
how long after trying to start it dose it start.a fue minits or a fue hours?
as he turns her over when she ant starting is there smoke comming out the back?if so what colour?
if he turns the ignition on and wates for the glow plug light to go out and then repeats this does she start?
has the fuel filter been changed reasently and if so,who changed it?
how long has he had this problem and if it is a long time has it got worce with time or stayed the same?

flower man here are the answers to your questions.
1) about a minute.
2)no
3)yes
4)yes(at a garage the nationwide)
5)every year only in the winter for last two years(fine in the summer)
i also have got some information, when he first starts it, it hesitates then starts,it then runs fine never misses no black smoke. in the morning starts fine but you drive for a mile and stop when restarts no life
in battery leave for a minute then it starts(battery has tested and its fine).
