You're not wrong. Last year I towed a 30' long 3,500 kgs ex Police recruiting caravan (ironic eh?) down from the Midlands and although it tried to overtake me when I was doing 65 mph down hill on the A34 at one stage, we both survived, and I know it could have coped with a much heavier load.... |
bet that made your bottom twitch.
had a few forty foot trailers try and pass me in my hgv days, cant beat looking in your mirror when your braking hard to see it coming past.oh how i miss those days........... 8) |

Just to throw my bit in.
I love my Bighorn 3.1 and it tows my 23ft Caravan very well.
I do thousands of miles a year and used a 4.6 v8 Range Rover for a short while.
To me the Isuzu 3.1 is King of the towing world, I did my research before buying one,
on a web site the Bighorn and The Toyota Amazon were listed at 3.5 Tonnes Max tow,
In Gloucester near the M5 / J11a is Birdlip hill, it is a good test point, halfway up it, there
is a lay-by, in years gone by on a bank holiday it was full of sad caravanners with the bonnets up.
This year I have travelled up it twice towing 1,750kg and as other 4x4s start to fade, i happily pass them by. _________________ God hates volvos and Loves Isuzu owners as do we all, amen |

I know over here you have to watch width as well! Anything over 7'6 wide, you have to tow with a vehicle minimum 3.5t unladen weight such as a van or large 4x4.
As for plates, it is interesting! It may be the same story as the Ford Ka - no one thought about putting a plate on it, so it cannot legally tow anything!! Makes you wonder if they forgot about the trooper in canada, which would be a big mess up! |

The ford Ka was specifically and intentionally not designed to tow. You can technically I believe fit a generic towbar to a for Ka pre 1998, but after 98 all towcars must be type approved and must have official towbar mounting points. Thats the result from the caravan cllub.
What I cant understand, and someone may be able to enlighten me, is how a renault clio 1.2 is supposed to tow 1600kg! That's the manufacturer's towing weight limit...all I can say is (for a laugh) when we towed my single pony box (700kg) with it, it snaked and waved and twitched at 30...so we decided not to us it...well my pal drove it into a car transporter...! _________________ '98S reg Irish Trooper 3.0DT Citation (LWB 7seat)

Interesting...the 54 plate clio he had was plated on the VIN plate to 1200kg and the handbook to 1600kg...
Personally, i think a camping trailer is all id want to tow with it... _________________ '98S reg Irish Trooper 3.0DT Citation (LWB 7seat)

For general info, these are the limits of the 3.0 Citation:-
Max Gross Vehicle Weight 2730kg - vin plate (MAM)
Max Gross Train Weight 6030kg - vin plate
Max Braked Trailer Weight 3500kg - weights plate (passenger door area)
Max Unbraked Trailer Weight 750kg
Which means if you want to tow the full trailer, the car must be 200kg off its max weight. Odd huh?!
In this country you shouldnt tow a trailer over 2730kg according to what I've heard and read, but all references say that the manufacturer limit is gospel and 1:1 ratio for 'guidlines only'...who knows?! _________________ '98S reg Irish Trooper 3.0DT Citation (LWB 7seat)
