For those with starting problems, or smoke issues, these images may help workout what some of your problems are caused by, based on damage seen on removed Glow Plug probe tips.
Problem: Enlarged probe tip
Possible cause: / Solution:- Excessive voltage (12v plug in 24V system or vice versa)
Check:- On-board & Glow Plug voltage
- Failure of alternator or regulator
Check:- Charging system
- Stored in damp condition prior to use
Check:- Storage conditions
Problem: Broken probe tip
Possible cause: / Solution:- Excessive glowing / voltage (12v plug in 24V system or vice versa)
Check:- On-board & Glow Plug voltage
- Failure of alternator or regulator.
Check:- Contacts on regulator
Problem: Damaged or missing probe tip
Possible cause: / Solution:- Failure of ignition unit
Check:- Ignition unit is correctly installed
- Direction or regularity of fuel jet incorrect
Check:- That the correct ignition unit is installed
- Sealing fault causing spraying position error
Check:- GlowPlug installation point for carbon deposits
Problem: Deformed probe (overheating)
Possible cause: / Solution:- Failure of ignition unit
Check:- Ignition unit is correctly installed
- Direction or regularity of fuel jet incorrect
Check:- That the correct ignition unit is installed
- Wrong spraying position due to faulty sealing
Check:- GlowPlug installation point for carbon deposits
- Excessive glowing / voltage (12v plug in 24V system or vice versa)
Check:- Contacts on Glow Plug regulator and Glow Plug voltage
- Failure of alternator or regulator.
Check:- Contacts on regulator
- Function or timing fault in injection unit
Check:- Fuel injection timing
Problem: Swollen ring on probe tip
Possible cause: / Solution:- Oil in combustion chamber, probably due to engine wear
Check:- Piston clearance in cylinders and oil consumption
Problem: Missing probe
Possible cause: / Solution:- Failure of ignition unit
Check:- Ignition unit is correctly installed
- Direction or regularity of fuel jet incorrect
Check:- That the correct ignition unit is installed
- Wrong spraying position due to faulty sealing
Check:- GlowPlug installation point for carbon deposits
- Function or timing fault in injection unit
Check:- Fuel injection timing
- Thread damage to opening of cylinder head, where Glow Plug is installed
Check:- The opening of cylinder head for thread damage / carbon fouling
- Glow Plug insufficiently tightened allowing plug to sit incorrectly
Check:- Glow Plug Torque
Problem: Probe touching body of Glow Plug
Possible cause: / Solution:- Over-tightened Glow Plug - bent on installation
Check:- Glow Plug torque
- Thread damage to opening of cylinder head, where Glow Plug is installed
Check:- The opening of cylinder head for thread damage / carbon fouling
Problem: Holes in probe - cracks - probe melted next to body of Glow Plug
Possible cause: / Solution:- Failure of ignition unit
Check:- Ignition unit is correctly installed
- Direction or regularity of fuel jet incorrect
Check:- That the correct ignition unit is installed
- Wrong spraying position due to faulty sealing
Check:- GlowPlug installation point for carbon deposits
- Function or timing fault in injection unit
Check:- Fuel injection timing
- Thread damage to opening of cylinder head, where Glow Plug is installed
