Isuzu trooper 3.1 TD 189,000 miles , usually starts 1st time every time , BUT this morning it was quite cold and frosted up , it took at least 3 attempts to start .
next , i dove it slowly off the drive down to the main road and set off on journey , where i would normally excelerate up to around 60 mph , the car seemed to struggle and was quite noisey from the engine as if it was struggleing .
After a while it seemed ok ( approx 10 miles ).
what would cause this could it be the oil temp as it was v.cold and the oil pressure was bit higher than usual at around 55-65 psi, normally runs at around 30 psi at 2 1/2 ,000 rpm.
Do i have an oil pressure problem or is it the oil thickness etc .
Also which oil should i be putting in to it ( viscosity ) and what is the difference between semi and fully synthectic , which is best for this engine.
thanks for your help .

Darren I changed recently from semi-synthetic 10w-40 grade Shell Helix Diesel which was fine during summer to fully synthetic 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra. Cranking time greatly reduced; car was due oil and filter change, but I also had noticed much longer cranking times, so was keen to put in lighter grade. If I can find a fully synthetic 0w-30 or 40 grade, I'll use that next winter.
My Isuzu dealer only uses Shell Ultra, but it is Ultra expensive at £33 for 4 litres.
Dig around in the website and you'll find any number of posts on oil, info on semi/fully synthetic, and many viewpoints on what's best. for which engine.
What does the handbook advise? If all else fails, read the instructions!
Sounds unlikely just to be "treacley" oil, but some of the old masters will advise shortly, I'm sure.
I've got my grille covered at the moment, to help speed up warm up. I wish I could get "old fashioned" radiator muff for my Trooper, so I'd get quicker warm up and it would look neater than my heavy duty polythene and duct tape.
Cheers. |

Any one else advise on this .
which way around does the oil pressure gauge work ie. if it cold outside will the gauge be reading lower or higher oil pressure in the engine on first starting of the engine
reason i ask is i noticed the oil pressure is high , between the 55 and 110 mark on my gauge ( PSI i think ) , when the out side temp is cold .
thanks |

Oil pressure will read higher when oil is cold and thick.; reading will drop as oil temperature rises.
My handbook ( 3 .0 L T/D Trooper, 2000) reads:
"The normal oil pressure guage reading can range from 14 psi at hot idle to more than 140psi during cold acceleration".
Your readings look within spec. |
