Trooper's out of action at the mo waiting for a new clutch to go in so borrowed a mates 1998 diesel astra estate to get about in as he's on hols so didn't need. Anyway, stupidly put 30 euro's of PETROL in it. Realised my mistake so filled up with 35 euro's of diesel hoping I could run it and just keep topping up with diesel till it was all out. Went to start and it wouldn't so left it where it was. Went back today to try and suck the tank out but couldn't get a hose to go into the tank. It did however start but after conflicting advice from the frogs in the village decided to come on here and ask before I moved it. Any of you chaps know if I'll *beep* the engine if I drive it? If yes, how can I empty the tank as can't get hose down there to suck it out?
Thanks in advance. |

I would empty the tank from a fuel line. _________________ |

I am assuming this is the Isuzu 1.7 Turbo Diesel in there. Your quite lucky as these are fairly resilient to punishment. I would say the best way is to drop the tank, but as you can guess that is a chore, but ultimatly the best course of action. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

Cheers chaps, will drain as much as poss and brim it before driving. Not sure how yet as can't get a hose through the filler far enough to reach tank. Maybe if I just drill a hole in the bottom and glue a patch over it when it's empty? |

Pull the rubber pipe off the back of the filler neck, see if you can get a pipe in then, depends if the anti syphon mechanism is in the filler end or the tank end, if it's in the tank end, get a big container under it to catch any spillage and remove the rubber filler from the tank, then pull the anti syphon mech out, it's usually a piece of plastic tube with a plastic ball in it. |

Thanks for the replies chaps. Been onto the Astra owners club ( had to sign up to post a question but nevermind ) much ribbing and comiserations but finally got answer I needed. Back seat out, lift flap of carpet, metal flap on top of tank, half a turn clockwise and I'm in there. Anti siphoning doohicky stops me going in through the filler.
Aint the internet grand.
Don't think I'll be a regular on the Astra boys site though. hopefully. |

I might have the same problem in reverse soon as its looking like I'm going from diesel to petrol and its a good few years now since I drove a petrol, the wifes had oil burners for the last 10 years, I've had them for the last six or seven. Even worse I'm going to have to remember to do petrol AND LPG. _________________ Phil

I think the nozzle on a diesel pump is too big to go down a petrol filler so you should be ok Phil. |
