It shuts flaps in the exhaust and inlet so get the engine warm quick, problem is the exhaust one can stick shut with soot in the pipe.
Most people dont use it or disconect it.
BTW, welcome  Very Happy

The 2.8 Exhaust flap is slightly more reliable than the 3.1 as its up in the engine bay and doen't get covered in crud from the road/green lanes etc. Have a ganders at my readers drive thread for hints and tips (hit the picture in my signature)

I did Very Happy

As most people seem to suffer with stuck exhaust flap thingy on the 3.1's I thought I should mention the difference ... The 2.8's seem to be a bit more reliable and therefore safer to use without the fear of it getting stuck. Mine worked fine up until I removed it all. Very Happy

Both my 2.8's got stuck  Laughing
I think its down to lack of use and being to close to the turbo, the early MK1 was even worse, it was cable operated by a servo on the other side of the engine  Shocked

Lol ... mine wasn't used for about 10 years and still worked when I got her. Oh well ... must of been all the oil bleeding through from the bust turbo seals keeping it lubricated. Mine was vacuum operated. Either way I have pulled it all apart now and replaced the button with a spare fog light button ready for my roof light conversion.
