I've done about 10 trips to the plain over the last 5 years, mostly with a byways officer & mostly lasting all weekend. In the dry most of it is quite easy going although it takes some navigating to stay on the right track because of all the military traffic which criss crosses everywhere.
In the wet is can be quite challenging as the surface changes to being very slippery (a mixture of clay & chalk). There are some areas with some deep water after the army stopped extracting water.
Some of the best bits (challenging) are quite hard to find and aren't on the main plain area.
Don't be tempted to move off the byways (no matter how tempting areas like Chalkpit Hill look) because there are Rangers around as well as Police in LRs Evil or Very Mad
You have to be aware that large areas get closed off when the ranges are active and always look out for the flags! I'm going in April with some friends (all ex Vauxhall Offroad Club members) for 2 full days and fingers crossed some night driving Twisted Evil
