Greetings all, took my 1998 3.1 Troop into Chemix today for MOT and oil/filter change. It passed MOT after they replaced a rear number plate bulb. They give a print out of any other problems they come across, but the thing that really pissed me off was they highlighted the fact that the heat sheild was loose but made no attempt to contact me to ask if they should tighten it up. Well me not being much of a mechanic these days I can't imagine it's much of a job to do while it's up on the ramp or is it?
Possibly 4 bolts 3 or 4 minutes work.
how difficult is it for me to do? Do I need to get it up on a ramp?
Sorry to whinge on but am really really pissed off about this dont these people know what a customer is? A little goodwill goes a long way.

the heat shields are round the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe by the turbo tin covers held by 10mil bolts |

They tend to wrot aeway at the fixings together with the exhaust seem, one trick is to open up a suitable jubilee clip to clamp it down again if you can find a suitable location or as a last resort remove it as replacement exhausts dont have a shaild anyway.
The bolts themselves are most likely rusted solid and would need gas axed off. Probably why the garage just advised they need fixing. _________________ 1998 Isuzu Trooper 3.1DTi SWB Commercial

Bit awkward Phil .. Mild steel cover .. Cast manifold ...
Had a quick look at mine and its all still intact but you can see were the problem lies with the retaining bolts rusting away with the continual heating up and cooling down...... as a motor dealer I certainly wouldn't like to attempt to tighten them as its to easy to open a can of worms with snapped bolts maybe damaged manifold and certainly no garanteed two minute job.

Sorry, I was thinking of a heat shield further down the exhaust underneath. _________________ Phil

Well guys I was begining to feel a bit lonely here , thanks for the info I did'nt realise there were 2 heat shields. Will they both suffer from the rusty bolt problem? should I just ignore them and if they drop off so what, apart from the debris being a traffic hazard.
thanks for your help keith |

if they are rusted from the bolts they can be welded to the bolt with just a spot weld not too much in case you wish to remove them later |
