PostPosted: Thu Apr 27, 2006 11:25    Post subject: Transfer Case Oil Change Reply with quote

My auto box has an iffy reverse gear and the atf fluid looks at correct level. Am wondering if trans case oil can have anything to do with this. Also, can someone explain what the trans case oil is actually lubricating and what the atf fluid is lubricating?

Sorry for such a dumn question, but thats me.

The ATF fluid lubricates the gears inside the tranny and is also used in the torque convertor to actually transmit the power from the engine to the gears.

The transfer case is an additional gearbox that on demand connects the front wheels into the main gearbox giving you 4wd and also has an extra ratio that provides you with you 4 lo capability, it's basically just an extra small gearbox added on after the main one. It's also lubricated by oil. This lubricates the gears inside the box.

Thanks for the response. I've only used 4wd a few times and have no real need to do it (2wd seems to do fine on the meagre off road stuff we do). Still unsure of my reverse gear problem as it works fine when engine cold and really plays up after engine gets hot. Fluid levels are good.

best regards

ATF fluid level should always be checked with the engine/transmission up to temperature and the engine running. It will be different when cold or with the engine off. It could be something as simple as the selector needing adjustment meaning that it's not phyisically shifting the box into gear properly hence the intermittant problem. I don't know if there is any adjustment on the shifter linkages but worth checking this out.

Thanks Phil. I'll have another look tonight. When the problem occurs, if I rev the engine it will eventually engage reverse - sometimes more often than others. I noted yesterday that a big rev seems to make it engage if its really being stubborn. Otherwise it doesn't engage and just sits there as I rev. Shifting through the gears seems not to make a difference.

to diagnose your problem if you cant fix by topping up or changing the atf then you need a autobox specialist common fault on GM boxes is broken spring holding the reverse check ball which holds it in gear
could also be low line pressure he will have gauges to check this

before that check the transmission oil in the morning cold start engine move g/stick through gears put in park leave engine running check oil should be at bottom mark on stick

also check colour of oil red or light brown ok any darker oil needs changing

Bottom mark as in the "C" mark? Its never at that mark, even when cold. Checked today after starting, warming for 5 mins then driving 2 miles. It was over the H mark. It couldn't be too full, could it?

thanks again

if its over the top mark after afew miles its definitely too full that can cause pressure problems and frothing this can give rise to gearchange problems you dont say what colour your oil is??

light brown is ok you may just need to drain a little out

if you do it your self do it cold so you don`t burn your self dont worry if too much comes out just make sure you top it up a little at a time and keep checking

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably ask my mechanic to do it.

Let you know how it goes.

best regards and thanks again
