No change  after that Sad .

So.... I spent 2 hours or so yesterday with a cloth and a tube of autosol polishing the reed valve seat to almost a mirror finish, and with a replacement reed valve (mine had a couple of small dents in it  Confused)  I managed to get it to seal properly.

I also thoroughly cleaned the fuel cap and made sure the valve in it was working freely.

This morning she started up with just a wisp of smoke, which I can handle.

Time will tell whether that's it sorted or not. Fingers crossed.

Maybe a way to go is a 12v electric pump wired into the glowplug relay so it only pumps during preheat .That would push the air pocket  out the filter and down through the head so the air pocket gets moved ?

The mechanical lift pump then takes over  after start up .

Just an update.....

I know it's warmer in the mornings now, but the smoking and rough running on cold start seems to be sorted. There is a small wisp of smoke on cold start up, but nothing like before, and pretty much what I would expect from a 16 YO motor, so I'm going to leave her alone now.
