I know this guy http://www.4x4funday.com/ runs open days at Briecliffe near Burnley, I went to one a good few years ago and it seemed to be well run although he has changed sites since. There are green lanes around but again, I haven't driven any for some years, best to find a local 4x4 club and go with a small group as since my green laning days some may well have been re-classified and closed. You can also try contact the rights of way officer at Bolton council and asking him to tell you where your local Byewyas Open to All Traffic (B.O.A.T.S) are. Don't try and go on your own though as you may get well and truly stuck!

There are quite a few around, however, how many are still open from my greenlaning days would be something that needs investigating.

A few from memory:

Kings Highway - Rossendale over to Rochdale, a fantastic in places stone cobbled road across the tops

Rooley Moor road near Bacup

Theres one that goes from Hebden Bridge to Howarth and another from Malham to Kirkby Lonsdale

Get to the town hall, ask to see the "Definitive rights of way" map. Some of these roads may have been downgraded to bridleways since I last drove them, some may have TRO's on them (Traffic Regulation Orders) temporarily closing them. If Green lanes are excessively wet and muddy don't drive them if you're likely to cause lots of damage, its the sure fire way to get them closed.

Have a look here at the Green Lane associations website http://www.glass-uk.org/

Hi there, yes it is a very good idea not go green laning by yourself, always but always take a buddy along with you. When you come to some kind of "feature" make sure you are not on his bumper, let him clear the feature first before you enter it. Take a chain by all means but be aware you can do damage with it, a rope or a strap is better, better still is a KERR (kinetic energy recovery rope). Make sureyou are aware of the risks when using it. Recovery points must be secure and please speak to someone who knows about it. Most important of all have FUN

Hi Marky,

Did you ever find anywhere in the northwest to have a play? I want to go for half a days play on a saturday or sunday without trekking halfway across the UK if possible...

I've been to a couple of Richard Walshs fundays back when I had my Suzuki SJ, was up on Blackshaw edge the other side of Burnley, wasn't bad but not the best site I've been to. He's been going for a good ten/twelve years now, in fact I have one of his stickers on my toolbox still. Don't know what that sites like but I have a very good idea where it is and it is a moorland site.
