hi all, took a trip to skegness from nottingham, got there but expansion tank was blowing out steam and what looked like black water dripping on the road, recovery man said it was head gasket blown. got the bighorn 3.1 home and topped up with water next day, run about 2-3 miles and seemed to be ok. water in rad was clean,no bubbling or similar tell tales, i even ran the engine for about 15 minutes at 1500-2000 revs, still kept at normal temp, could it be something else and not the head gasket?

The black water could just be the engine self steam cleaning itself. No doubt there is a fair bit of oil and crud on it and the steam will just wash that off. I would go with a coolant flush and top up with new stuff and see where it gets you.

hiya, i did like you said and took it for a longer drive. i turned off the overdrive switch to get some pressure up on the run, this is after i flushed the rad and engine out and up went the temp gauge after about 30 minutes then it started to go down again when i hit traffic. after that i took it to be pressure tested and the mechanic said there was no sign of head gasket problems so back to square one. i did clean the rad fins off they were gunged up at the bottom of the rad.any idea what else might be the cause? any suggestions welcome. thanks all... dave.

They don't do thermostats now in HALFORDS...Well no the one in St Helens they don't and it is a major outlet. Better shop on ebuygum for the QTH 411 K cheaper anyway only £9 posted.

Don't know whether it's just in the North West but Halfords seem to be reducing their stocks at shops. You have to order a lot of the stuff they previously had on the shelves and they get it in from local motor factors within 24 hours.
