Hi Everybody,
I have an imported 3.1 tdci Bighorn that has now done approx. 150,000 miles. It had only done 40,000 miles when I bought it. My question is.....how often should the valve clearances be checked as mine have never been ? The engine still sounds superb and I have spoken to owners who have covered 250,000 miles and not had the clearances checked. Is this a critical issue ?

Not critical but for the sake of £10 for a new rocker gasket and some sealant I would whip the top off and make sure they are at 0.4mm next time you have a major service. I did my 2.8 at 200,000 km's and a couple were out slightly.

Thanks Rhanagar,
I'm due a cambelt change in the spring so will have the valves checked at the same time. It's reassuring that valve wear seems to be minimal on Isuzu engines......unlike some of my cars/bikes in the past !

Regards,

Colmar

Just a thought, at cam belt change/tappet adjustment time, it might be worth thinking about glow plug renewal if they haven't been done for a few years. Not necessary to have the rocker cover off for glow plugs, but does allow a bit more space to see what you're doing when removing/changing the plugs.

The 2.8 and 3.1 are old school rugged engines. They tend to rough it like the best of them.
