Hi folks.
I have a 1990 Mk1 Lotus Bighorn which, after it has been stood for a few hours gives out a long moaning noise which lasts maybe 5 seconds or so and appears to come from the o/s rear near the fuel filler.  Can anyone enlighten me as to what causes this.
Thanks in hope.  John

Where, in the 'cycle of engine life' does this noise occur? Is it when you try to re-start after "leaving it sit for a few hours" or just when you get back into the car?

I mean, is it caused by the engine [sucking fuel, or whatever] or just by your weight on the seat - which might tilt the chassis and release a partial-vacuum in the fuel-tank, perhaps??

Hi. It usually happens when the motor has been stood for a couple of hours and there is no-one near it.

Late reply but this sounds like a blocked fuel tank breather..next time you turn the car off go and undo the filler cap..if there is a whoosh you need to look at the cap as the tank will be pressurising and that puts extra strain on your fuel pump.
