Yo, 92 Bighorn 3.1 intercooler. I had to remove the alternator and while I have it apart I'm thinking about removing the AC compressor and putting in a pulley wheel for the power steering (it is the compressor above the alternator correct?) . No AC neccessary where I live, and you can gain a minuscule amount of power? Am I able to do this or no?

Yes you can. There is a replacement pulley available for non A/C trucks. You will have to get a different (shorter) power steering belt though as well.

No need to warn you about releasing the A/C gas. Under pressure it can do a lot of harm. I don't know about Canada but in the UK deliberate release of A/C gas is illegal and also a hefty maximum penalty (5 Years and £20,000). The damage A/C gas on the environment is pretty harsh so get it recovered properly please.

No problem. Just happened to be around and done what your asking. Those pulley wheels are quite rare and often get snapped up by people with failed A/C. Personally I would get the bolts and bits first, then do the conversion.

Removing the AC pump makes access to the alternator so much easier!

Yup .. if you just unbolt it from the block, and remove the battery you can swing it on the hoses onto the battery tray avoiding having to release the gas.
