Hi there!

I have 2002 trooper with the 4jx1 engine.
2 weeks ago the engine over heated, after adding water I was able to drive back home.
after checking it - the thermostat was defected so I replaced it.

further checking shows that when the engine is working hard (- after a long steep hill for example), it doesn't get too warm but the coolant fills the reservoir and it spills out, when you let the engine cool down - the reservoir is empty and there is coolant missing also in the radiator.
I tried pressure testing the radiator using a pressure tester (a pump..) and after a few pressuring and releasing pressure - when you start the engine there is white smoke from the exhaust for a short time and it disappears.

Could it be injector/sleeve seals or is it definitely head problem?
There are no obvious bubbles coming out of the radiator..

Thank you!
Elad.

If you have like kettle  steam coming out the exhaust then its possibly head gasket but be prepared for a cracked or warped  head in the worst case .

I would advise against having it machined flat but sometimes it works but its not real fix for  a 4x4 you want to keep .

Combustion pressure is only present under the injector nozzle face  into the head and its easier for it to blow across the copper washer  and pressurise the diesel gallery than lift the injector sleeve  and the injector and so push the coolant out  in my view.

But ! its a Forum and others may have more wisdom .

And Robbo and eithan may post too .

Umm . no edit button .

Opps.

Pretty much as Gribble says.....These water loss problems are a PITA so IMHO head off get it pressure tested, but check for any external leaks first especially on the turbo/exhaust side of engine.
