Hi Everyone,

I’ve just bought another Bighorn (previously had a 92 V6 manual SWB and a 92 diesel LWB auto), and I thought I’d start posting my build.

I bought a 93 LWB Auto Diesel for $1500. Came with 265/75 x 16 Maxxis Bighorns (7-8mm each tyre), Recaro interior, electronic heater controls, Radar detector (Hahahahaha), plus a sub and amp and a few other bits and pieces. It has only 189,00km on the clock. To get it road-worthy it needs the following WoF:

- Address the smoky exhaust (stuffed turbo and possible leaky pump)
- New brake light bulbs
- New wiper blades
- Fix the leak coming from the drivers rear axle
- No reverse lights (has an extra spotlight that is manually activated when reversing)

It also needs $1200 to cover road-users charges (a form of tax in NZ).

Current progress:

- Turbo replaced with a new factory spec item
- Wipers and lights replaced
- Replaced the inner axel seal and swapped the axel from another vehicle (addresses replacing the seal and bearing issue just to be sure)
- Auberins dual Boost/EGT gauge and senders, EGT is pre-turbo
- Oils and filters in progress
- EGR removed by previous owner
- Inhibitor switch replaced (arm was broken inside) = now have reverse lights and beeper
- 2.5inch exhaust installed next week
- Intercooler soaked in degreaser and all intake hoses cleaned of oil
- Transcooler install next weekend

Current issues (will post my questions elsewhere on the forum and direct them back here):

- Hissing noise on shut-down: Not the turbo, sounds like it could be the small vac hose from the Alternator/Vac pump
- High EGT: Idle = 180c, 50kph = 400-500c, 100kph 750-850c
- Low Boost: can only get max 9psi
- Front passenger noisy wheel bearing?
- Both CV boots are split
- Smokey exhaust at Idle: Took Dan for a 20min blast down the motorway, exhaust was clear when I parked up. 2hrs later I restarted and it was smoking again

I have looked at some YouTube clips on upping the boost and fuel, saw that the max fuel cap has been attacked (badly) and there was diesel in the plunger hole. It is off to a diesel pump specialist to get the pump and injectors reconditioned.

Future Mods:

- Provent 200 oil breather/separator
- Boost controller
- Front and rear tube bumpers and rock sliders
- 2” lift
- 32” or 33” tires
- Manual hubs
- Winch
- Snorkel
- Some light bars
- Flares

So that's about £700 for the car itself - And this $1200/£550 - Is that an ANNUAL charge like our 'Road Tax'?

Haha not quite. It was a farm vehicle for 4 years so I needed to catch up on what we call "Road-user chargers" or RUCs.

These are charged at $58nzd for every 1000km you travel, and are bought in advance. Our petrol has these charges included in the price at the pump but not our diesel ($2/L for petrol, $1.30/L for diesel).

The previous owner did not know he had to claim back the RUC while he was using it on his farm.

In NZ almost all of the Bighorns are now 250,000km+ and are going for between $2000-8000 so I think I got an OK deal.....plus I love working on stuff so its a win-win for me  Very Happy

I should also mention our Warrant of Fitness (WoF) which is similar to your MOT. This is $30 every 6 months and vehicle registration (technically its an annual licience) is about $400 per year (NZD).

The NZ Dollar is coming up at 47p just now - so under thirty quid a year for 'MOT' sounds fair enough... <£200 for the licence... I think it's £240 - $500-ish  for road tax for the Bighorn.  94p/Litre for petrol...    - 61p/Lite for diesel + 3p/Km - makes your diesel about 91p/ litre...  £1.19 in Livingston Scotland at the mo...

So yeah... 115,000 miles on it roughly; should be plenty of life in that. And they ARE good to work on...

So! All good then! Hope you and Diesel Dan have many happy years together!

I hope this will be my last vehicle for quite some time. For the purchase price of a Landcruiser 80 with 400,000km+ (about $13000) I can afford to fix Dan several times over with plenty left over for mods  Cool

Bought mine by 'accident' six years ago - I'm a cameraman and use a 4x4 to transport kit into awkward places; ran Range Rovers for 20 year until my last RRC keeled over. Couldn't find one that the *beep* wasn't hanging out of so brought the Bighorn for £1200 as a stopgap...  She doesn't owe me  £4K yet, has been all over Scotland, the UK and even out to Milan and back three times!

The day will come when we have to part of course - But I suspect I might shed real tears!

They hold up well!
