Hello,
I have a 91 trooper bighorn, that i have heavily modified the body & rear end chassis, so from being a 7 seater, it is now a wide bodied twin wheelbase pick-up, or will be when i install the rear axle which came from the Isuzu’s 3.5t 'Grafter complete with air suspension system, i have to flair the arches on the back by 6 inches each side, and the fronts by 3.5 inches, as a panel beater by trade this wont be a problem.
My question is, i want to change the model name on the V5 to LandRunner instead of Trooper, Would there be any problems legally with copy write laws? Does anyone know a contact number or email addy for the Isuzu legal department? because it no longer looks anything like a trooper, apart from the nose, i have been told by DVLA that it would have to be re- registered as a light commercial vehicle again not a problem for me. |

Hmm ... interesting.
You will have to contact IM I would of thought as they are the Isuzu representative in the UK:
http://www.imgroup.co.uk/contact/
You realise you are still limited by the VIN plate on what you can carry and tow. 750 Kg in the back and 3.3t on a tow hook from recollection.
That is unless you have it completely re-registered. Then you are looking at a full VOSA test etc etc which is going to be a pain.
Also don't forget that your new configuration as a light commercial affects things like speed limits and restrictions in London (LEZ and congestion charge zones) _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

I have already had contact with IM but as its a jap import, and not a uk car they are reluctant to get involved, however i do have a good friend who works at Vosa, he is helping me with all the advice i need regarding getting it re-registered with new GVW ect ect, |

Unfortunately Isuzu will only go through IM. I have tried contacting them directly with email address given to me by IM, but they have ignored me.
Personally I would stick with Isuzu Trooper (or Bighorn). Only reason being insurance. Far easier (and probably cheaper) to insure it as a modified truck, rather than a special creation. I would be tempted to phone a few specialist insurance companies like Adrian Flux, Keith Michaels etc and see what they say. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

Possibly... Although it's not copyright law that might be your problem but that of trade marks and 'passing off'. And for clarity it matters-not that your use of the (possible) trademark is 'non-commercial'.

As a 'trade name' this already exists and is in use. If the people doing these conversions choose to do so, they can take legal action against you. That said; it seems unlikely as such an action would be horrendously expensive. But I'm unsure how DVLA will react to being asked to endorse a possible breach of trademark/trading style - even though the owner of the 'Intellectual Property' (IP) is overseas... |

If they're 'brand savvy' the most likely scenario is that they'll not respond... They won't endorse nor will they threaten. That or they'll get their lawyers to contact you. - On the other hand they may not be bothered! |
