As the title says, I have a 59 plate rodeo 2.5, 55k on the clock, that has developed a distinct rattling/ chattering noise from the front of the engine, noticeable after she has warmed up. It is most noticeable when you lift the foot off the accelerator pedal and the revs are dropping between 2000 and 1500, it is definitely directly linked with engine speed and not turbo/road speed.

I had a friend rev it whilst I stuck my head under the bonnet and the noise seemed to be coming from the front right hand side of the engine, but hard to locate, any ideas??

Just been tinkering under the bonnet, loosened the belts and checked all pulleys for play (alternator, bottom pulley, waterpump, ac, ac idler) all seem ok. Did find boost leak (split pipe going into intercooler, caused by sharp edge on intercooler inlet), but I think that's another problem.

Out of curiosity does anyone know what engine oil these use, engine code 4jk1, 2.5 common rail?

What does the vac solenoid below the intercooler do, could it be that? Maybe a hole in a vac line? Any ideas at all?

An update for anyone interested.

I have since run two full tanks of diesel through the pickup with low ash mineral 2 stroke oil (comma, JASO FB spec)added at a ratio of 200:1, the noise has reduced dramatically, if I hadn't heard it before I wouldn't notice it now, but it is still there.

There is also a marked increase in engine response and power, I have a steep road up to my house and was having to drop down to 1st gear to get up it (annoying cos my old 2000 Ranger did it in 2nd!), now it sails up in 2nd no bother, I can even let the revs drop to 1000rpm and put the foot down and it picks up from there no bother. Also any acceleration in 5th gear was quite out of the question before, but now she'll go from 60 to 80+ no bother.

The noise is still bugging me, I'm going to run a couple of tanks of straight diesel through it now and see if it returns, if so I'm thinking it's very much injector/injector pump related.

If it's gone quieter with some oil in the fuel it sounds like the injectors sticking/worn, very common on the 3.0 d4d hilux. Happens approx 1600-2000 rpm under light throttle ?  Shaun

Ye I was finding a lot about the hilux problem whilst looking on line. Aye it's loudest when falling between 2000 and 1800 under very light throttle, and more so when engine braking. I have a 6 month waranty on the vehicle, be intresting to see if this would be covered.

Can make a difference using quality fuel such a shell v power or bp ultimate. Seems a lot of common rail diesels suffer from it. If it's not covered try get hold of some Forte specialist injector cleaner

That would be good......if there was anywhere within 100 miles that sells it!  Sad
Have heard good things about the forte stuff, maybe give it a bash.
Thanks for your input

Update, noise became more persistent regardless of fuel, only once the engine was hot. I took the pickup to an Isuzu dealer who had a good look over it and couldn't figure anything out at all, I suggested perhaps it was an issue with the tappets, and was told that they had hydraulic self adjusting tappets, which I didn't agree with. Took the vehicle home disappointed £74 less well off, to find online that yes it does have adjustable tappets, to be adjusted, according to the service schedule every 40k to a cold clearance of 0.15mm inlet and exhaust.

I took it to a small Indy mechanic who gladly performed the task and hey presto no more noise, nice and quiet, even when she's on her knees hauling a loaded trailer up some very steep roads. He told me that they were all well out, the clearance being too big, I wonder if they were ever right.
