My trooper runs a bit too cool, I can't have the viscous fan off for an electric fan replacement as my electric system is already running at it's limits.

I've managed to find a 85 degree thermostat, the trooper doesn't overheat and gets up to temperature very quickly, but the hole for the water to pass through is much smaller than the 82 degree thermostat, I don't want to overheat when I've got a trailer on the back, but are there supposed to be options for the thermostat on this engine?

I always fit a Quinten Hazell QTH411K 85 degree stat in both my 2.8 and 3.1. Never had an issue to date and the heater matrix gets nice and toasty in the winter.

Will be. Diesels are more economical at higher temps as the heat aids the combustion. Wink

Is it a fine balance on the 3.1/2.8 engine with 82/85 degree thermostat?
I've got a self inflicted running to warm issue on my Frontera 2.8 with running between 1/4 upto 1/2 on the guage whereas it used to be at the comfortable 1/8 to 1/4. This is since I fitted the winch and winch bumper, which in hindsight, believe is to high. The winch is positioned inline with the radiator just below the inter cooler. My gut feeling is that I need to have major surgery on the winch bumper so that the winch gets positioned lower down nearer the chassis level.  For a sort term fix, been thinking about bodging an air scoop that can clipped on for road use that would force more air into the radiator channels. Another thought is maybe removing the viscous fan and fitting the twin fan Kenlow in there.
All that said and coming back to this thread, would a lower rated thermostat or removing the stat completely make that much of a difference or is it all about cooler air flow?

Don't forget that the Trooper have a top mounted intercooler and bonnet scoop. We get better airflow onto the rad that way. Might be offset by the aircon condenser though, but that cold air from the scoop does blast onto the top of the engine, and allows a good exit for hot air when standing still.

I was getting in the region of 280 miles per tank, purely city driving, that has gone up to 320 miles per tank since changing stats. I dont drive eco and been told ive got a lead foot, but not the sort of idiot who speeds up to wait at a red light. Well worth doing

Be careful with the gasket. I broke mine and the one in the kit doesn't fit. I just made one from a cornflakes packet to replace it.
