It is advisable to buy a genuine Isuzu thermostat or is non genuine OK?

Many moons ago (if my memory serves me correctly) we would test a temp gauge by earthing the wire that goes to the temp sender unit and the temp gauge needle should reasonably swiftly go to full hot. Is this still a valid way to test a temp gauge?

I'd be cautious but a quality one will be ok . Yes, that will test the gauge remember its the single wire one you want the other ones for the ECU to see the coolant temp.

Would you say Milner's would be good quality? They state it as 82DEG, I believe the genuine article is 85DEG.

It's a tough decision because genuine Isuzu is £25+VAT and Milners is £8+VAT

Am I right in assuming the temp sender unit (to the dash gauge) is the brass unit under the thermostat housing? If so it has more than one wire, which one do I earth to check the gauge?
