FWIW Re oil.
I was told by a rep from Morris Oils that - "There isn't a proper 'binding' definition of the spec for semi-synthetic so one supplier could put the equivalent of a teaspoonful of synthetic oil into a road-tanker-full of 'ordinary' oil - and then be able to legally describe the whole lot as "semi-synthetic" ... "
Stick to fully synthetic if at all possible ( but personally I avoid the ultra-high priced/much advertised brands such as Mobil).
Also bear in mind that companies like Halfords, Castrol, Morris, Comma, etc. do NOT own oil refineries.
They have to buy the base oil from one of the big refineries and (if they are a "blender" - like Castrol) to meet technical specs on tin they MUST buy the additive package from an accredited firm that works to strict standards. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

I used Castrol 10 W/40.
In 10k km the motor "eated" 1l of it.
Now I have wolf 10W/40, I made a tour through Albania to Greece, no big difference _________________ https://www.facebook.com/Mukandtheteam/ |

Filters are a bit hard to come by as they are allegedly a lifetime item. They are out there but it's a question of scouring the interweb. Most folks take the filter out, open it up along the crimped edges and clean the metal gauze with brake cleaner or petrol etc, re-crimp the edges and re-instal. Oils are as detailed in the sticky here on the forum, readily available at any motor factors. Expect to pay about £50 for the filter if you definitely want to replace and can find one. |

I've found one I think, I asked the question if it would fit mine and reply was
"Hi, i would be 99% sure this will fit yours if it still has the standard gearbox, if you look on the side of the gearbox it should have a small aluminium badge on with the gearbox type on AISIN GEARBOX MODEL AW30-40 or if no badge measure the size of the sump and let me know,, cheers
ONLY SUITABLE FOR --AISIN GEARBOX MODEL AW30-40 " _________________ Isuzu Bighorn 3.1 Auto-1994-Lotus Edition. |

Yep, that sounds like the one. The filter body is more rectangular than the majority of filters usually quoted as being the correct one (those are rectangular at one end and triangular at the other).
The auto box in the 3.1td is an Aisin Warner AW30-40LE. I know there is a AW30-40W which was used a lot by Volvo but don't know what the differences are. Have your guy check the 'LE' bit for compatibility. I got hold of one complete with sump gasket a couple of years ago for £19 (lucky find) but I think they are generally in the £50 range. Don't dismiss cleaning your existing one, not heard of anyone having problems having done it.

Sorted, I bought one for £46 posted with a gasket to....just the oil now....
Gearbox:
Automatic : Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). 8.6 Litres
Transfer Case : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic Engine Oil. 1.5 Litres
TOD (Torque On Demand) Transfer Case : Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). 1.9 Litres
Do I only need the Dexron for the box or do I need the other 2 also?
Cheers guys - Much Appreciated... _________________ Isuzu Bighorn 3.1 Auto-1994-Lotus Edition. |

You need:
Automatic : Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). 8.6 Litres
Transfer Case : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic Engine Oil. 1.5 Litres
YOU DO NOT NEED
TOD (Torque On Demand) Transfer Case : Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). 1.9 Litres
If you are planning flushing the gearbox, follow Grandads method posted below using Dexron II to flush it then refill with Dex III.
To fill/flush the autobox care of Grandad
Grandad wrote:
The following procedure can be used to replace fluid in the majority of auto boxes.
To remove all 8ltrs:
Remove sump gets about 3ltrs, clean filter replace sump and filter.
Top up with about 3ltrs.
Remove one of the hoses from the transmission oil cooler so it drains into a bucket.
Get another person to start the engine oil will come out of the hose.
While engine is running keep pouring oil in through the dipstick.
When it runs clear red stop engine.
Top up transmission fluid, run through the gears, check and then top up.
The above procedure can be used to flush the box using Dexron II then drained and finally filled with Dexron III.

I have a question regarding my Frame bushings, I know this section is not the appropriate section but you guys seem to know what's what..
What's the bushings called which are situated on the frame in between the front and back axles, there's 2 each side, frame to body bushings?
Cheers.. _________________ Isuzu Bighorn 3.1 Auto-1994-Lotus Edition. |
