My mechanic has informed me that, while going to change the thermostat, he could see that the Head Gasket has blown and that this is a big job to change on my '95 3.1 Bighorn. He also said that he would only know if the Head itself has cracked, once he's got the whole thing apart and then there's no going back. Should I agree to embark upon this course and would I be able to get a new/recon Head if needed? Is it wort it could be hundreds of £££s, or consign the old girl to the grave or would anybody buy it to take on themselves?

head gasket is a very easy job on those as theres no need to remove the cam belt as it's a push rod engine, he's right about the cracks though they are known to crack and it can only be seen when the head is off
