Same wheels as my Trooper.
Not sure why you think the caps were chromed ?
"I think the hub caps should be chrome ..."
Mine weren't. They are very thin alloy castings with a circular piece of black plastic stuck in the centre for contrast.
'Might' have been polished alloy originally - no sign of chrome even in hidden areas ... but all mine were cleaned with 1200 wet&dry plus soapy water rather than polished. Waxed later. Don't touch the plastic.
One tip is to put the fixing screws back with a smidge of copper grease on the threads. Gently tighten. If they seize and snap - it is a headache.
Am 99% sure the silver coloured main rim was painted or powder coated - THEN lacquered.
Lacquer is not everlasting.
Powder coating is OK but not perfect as it will eventually lift off if dampness gets underneath it.
[Much harder to find stove enamellers these days.]
My powder coater charges £5 extra per wheel to apply a coat of lacquer. Probably worth it.
Proper powder coaters :- strip the old paint off, sand or bead blast, DE-GAS ... then powder coat.
Obviously get tyres removed first and best cut the valve rubbers off carefully.
My local tyre firm stripped the old tyres off in seconds for a tiny amount of money. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper

Second thought.
Having done an excellent job of sanding them so far ...
Are you going to do a 'rattle can job' with the tyres kept on?
Silver wheel spray might look bright but lacquer should dull it down a touch.

Hello 07Trooper777
I decided to get them powder coated and lacquered in the end because it’s a better job if the tyres and valves are removed, plus the fact they are oven baked which I know is harder wearing than just spray painting them, I shopped around and got 4 of them done for £195 but not including the hub caps.
I found out the front face of the spokes for want of a better term are diamond cut but the best price I could find was £400 so I decided not to bother with that enhancement.
I’ll have a go at the hub caps myself, I’m not sure if the centre is black plastic stuck onto the aluminium or if it’s aluminium just painted black and lacquered, they are certainly all aluminium when viewed from inside.
The lacquer on the centre of mine was all lifting off and they looked a right mess, the sponge was catching on them when I washed the car down so I thought it was time to do something about it.
You asked what made me think the hub caps were chrome, I guess it was because I saw one advertised on e-bay I’ve included a picture, see what you make of it.
I know what you mean about the screws which hold the caps on, I’ve re-tapped the holes on mine and when it eventually needs new tyres I’ll take the caps off myself, let me put it this way I don’t trust the tyre places to fasten them gently and at the end of the day the screw is only going into aluminium, there’s good engineering practice for you.
As far as rattle can spraying, it’s been donkeys years since I’ve had a go at doing that, in fact I bought a spray gun but it was the type that does not need a compressor, it still works as old as it is but I do recall when I rubbed my hand over a door which I sprayed it was like rubbing my hand over a sheet of sand paper, but it may have been down to my technique or my finishing, I didn’t even put any lacquer on it, I just didn’t know what I was doing back then and there was no internet to watch video clips on in those days, never the less I do have some small areas including the spare wheel cannister which need painting on the Trooper.
I’m trying to decided if its best to buy paint for the gun or go down the rattle can avenue, I know the purest will be tearing their hair out saying no way can you use that gun setup it needs to be a compressor with a 150 litre tank.
I suppose at the end of the day I won’t be going into business spraying cars so really don’t think the expense of a compressor is worth it, besides I don’t know much rattle can painting has improved over the years, I do believe the spray nozzle can be adjusted on them now which was not a feature on them years ago not that I’m an expert on spray nozzle patterns, as I said its been a long time since I sprayed some doors on a Ford Sierra.

Sorry to be so very long replying. Life got in the way!
Wheels look smart now!
Powdercoating cost. Almost exactly what I have just paid to have 4x BMW 540i wheels done - plus another £20 for lacquering them.
Yep. I reckon the outer rims of mine are "diamond cut" but that does just add expense.
I'm not 100% sure about the black centres - I did not attempt to disturb them.
My centre caps had not a trace of chrome. Quite puzzled by that ad. Maybe later posh versions had chrome ? Quite glad mine did not.
I was lucky with my centre screws- they all came out (just) so I cleaned all threads with a tap and wire brush then replaced them with copper grease.
I know what you mean about tyre places. The airguns are often set to a high torque ...
My local one seems good - they set the airguns to a lower figure then finish off with a torque wrench.
Electric spray guns can be perfectly OK for smaller jobs. ['Orange peel' roughness used to respond to 1200 wet&dry then T-cut].
Pics are excellent by the way. That site is useful since PhotoBucket effectively stopped working. _________________ 02 3.0 Trooper
