My CEL came on and apart from a very few occasions, stays on for long periods.

Eithan checked and said it was an "unknown" code.

I checked with my clone Tech2 (whilst investigating airbag light) and sure enough it comes back with :-

P0338.

Does anyone know what this might be ? Trooper still runs OK.

Quick update.

One website for OBD codes says :-

"P0338 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit High Input"

But eithan has just fitted a new CPS ....

Could it be that this sensor does not like the 15 volts it appears to be charging at ... ?

i think sort the voltage issue first then look in to this one just incase  your following a red herring and it is because the voltage is to high for it. can you drive with out the alt connected up so it's not charging and just running on battery power? if you knew the light came on all the time within a few miles when it's all connected up then didn't come on within the same time frame when it's disconnected it might point to a voltage issue

Thanks eithan.

Still puzzling and was thinking about running it without the 'exciter' wire ...

This morning I drove it and watched the voltmeter on the dash.

The CEL came on when the meter showed only about 13 volts.
I put a load on in the form of heated rear window plus headlights plus heater fan on full .... CEL went off but then came back on a couple of minutes later.
Then it went off during return trip when dipped headlights only were on and voltmeter showed about 15 volts ...
Stayed off until I braked at a junction then came back on.

So no real pattern detected. Yet.

It is indeed odd !

Drove it today and the EML  was off for the first mile, then came on and then went off for a short distance then came on again -
all very inconclusive so far.

Only thing that occurs to me is that it is a classic 'intermittent' issue and possibly an intermittent earthing problem or poor contact somewhere ?

Will keep searching.

Might be making progress on this one ...

Today (Monday) I took the old alternator to a local specialist who put it on a testing machine in my presence.
Plenty of amps (off the 60 amp scale).
Voltage was within limits if good 12 volt signal put to "S" terminal. [That has the white/black stripe wire on offside of two pin plug]
But over volts arrived if sensing S wire interrupted/removed ....

Diaqnosis was "Alternator is actually fine - vehicle has a wiring problem - probably a broken/poor connection between the S wire at the plug and the connection to the battery + terminal. My remedy would be to run a fresh wire from S terminal to the battery positive."

Will be trying that.

they used to have an issue with the blue/white wire that was fixed with a new loom but that used to bring the 4x4 light on when accelerating, getting interesting now

Useful info.

I think it is white with a black stripe - [S or Sensor wire] the 'alternator tester' reckoned might be the issue.

I'll know tomorrow. Can't wait (having sorted the airbag light with eithan's invaluable help).
Only the intermittent CEL to go ...

Limited time today.

Made up a new wire to connect S wire direct to battery positive.
Sure enough the voltage meter indicates it is NOW charging at a proper rate - max is only about 14 volts. At ignition on it is showing 12.5 volts roughly.

BUT the CEL is still on intermittently. Blast!

Will dig out Tech2 and see if it picks up same code.

Sorry!!

Was only half a day !!!
But then got busy [and wet!] sorting out the rear brakes on her Suzuki Grand Vitara - because she found " ... the Trooper is too high to get into easily." Had put new shoes on then the self-adjuster fell apart causing destruction within.

So had my spanners out and hands full.   SWHMBO and all that ...

But then another problem has reared it's head .... [they do say when you retire you get busier]

There is a brake warning light on now so I will be checking for two flash codes.

And then, if it stays dry, I have a new front drop link to put on as eithan advised of slight play at MOT time.
