I have noticed that the charging system takes a couple of minutes to kick in after truck started, I thought there was a fault with the charging relay and bought a new one but it still does it, it also has a brand new alternator aswell.

It does it every time, i start the motor and battery registers 12 volts and then a couple of minutes later jumps to 13.4 volts.

Its like the charging system has a time delay on it.

Is this normal? and why would it do this?

Thanks for any help

Relay only kicks in when voltage from the alternator gets to a certain level. It's usually a couple of seconds at most, but can be slightly longer when cold outside. Can also take slight longer if warm starting as idle speed is reduced. Might be worth checking your idle speed>

sounds normal, might be due to the glow plugs after glow , this to lower emissions & give a smoother idle
