Replaced the fuel tank on my Trooper. (S*d of a job thanks to - rusty bolts, wrong tank supplied, etc.)

It was rusty on top and feed pipe had holed.

But still would NOT start reliably.

Put Tech2 on just before flattening batteries.

DTC'S said 'Camshaft sensor signal missing' and 'water temperature high input'

(Put data on whilst cranking and noticed water temp. was indicating -40F   !!!)

Ah well - more work.

Ref 'wrong tank supplied'.

I specifically ordered one for a SWB [and packaging said SWB].

But then removed my SWB tank and found the breather pipe IN FRONT of the filler.

[Supposedly the LWB design is ... breather behind filler]

As I had already painted my new tank, I had to go with it.

Managed to bend the breather pipe around to the front of the filler and left off the support bracket.

Moral of story is ... check yours BEFORE ordering  Embarassed  Embarassed

Ordered a new temperature sensor from a local business ...  biggish mistake.

Gave them the registration and stressed that it was a 'two pin' item [as one internet firm only produced a spade connector job after I had typed in a lot of details].

Turned up (£26 inc VAT !!!). It was in a box labelled Intermotor 55511. Looked good.
THEN found identical one on fleabay for a very low price ... but it said clearly "Will not fit this vehicle" ??

I had already fitted the new Intermotor one - BUT Tech2 still shows water temperature as -40F.

Any suggestions?

Cam sensor ...

Symptoms were - not starting even after rusty tank change - UNLESS I gave it a short squirt of Easy Start (which some Australians have called "Start Ya'son of a preacherman").
Then it would kick into life - and run perfectly for hours, never missing a beat.

Eventually - I decided to check the cam sensor connections properly.

Found  Embarassed  Embarassed that I was not getting 12v power-on when switched on !

[Found posts from eithan etc. that stated correctly that cam and crank sensors are 12v feed NOT "5v" as per the Isuzu Manual ]  ( that bit probably written by a short-sighted/dim/careless ex-employee of Haynes Manuals ... )

Decided to investigate with invaluable help of my neighbour who is electronically savvy and runs a 350,000 mile LR Defender.

Wires were NOT in the order shown in the manual BTW. They were black/yellow (power), black/pink (earth)on central pin, yellow (signal/output).

Checked wires on crank sensor ... same order and 12 volts appeared in black/yellow at switch on.

Neighbour has smaller hands (and a better/younger brain) and he soon found 12 volts appeared also at the cam sensor if harness was wiggled.

Guess what?  He found a harness connector just above starter motor that had not been latched tight and thus worked loose.

Squeezed it shut with a click and - vehicle now starts reliably every time !                        EASY WHEN YOU KNOW HOW     Embarassed  Embarassed

Website has coyly altered a word I put in above. I did NOT type "son of a preacherman" ??

The Australians call it "Start ya B*****d".
