So what is the timing belt replacement interval for a 3.1? The instructions Grandad kindly sent me say 63K miles, the service book seems to say every 54K miles and I've seen 60K miles bandied around on here. If it was 54K miles then the light would be on by now and it isn't so I'm guessing its one of the higher figures. If its 63K miles then I still have about 9K miles before it needs doing, if its 60K then its about 3K and if its 54K its well overdue!
Go on, who can give me a definitive answer? _________________ Phil

I always thought it was X number of miles or X number of years whichever the greater.. _________________

The light on mine came on at 100,000 kms and the belt was duly changed.....
I think the conventional wisdom is, if in doubt - change it out. _________________ 1999 Cougar with a NICE motor..

I believe my Monterey handbook states 60,000 miles or 6 years. _________________ Every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff from out of my brain.

for the 3.1 troopers the latest figures say 60000 miles pre 92 and 54000 after 92
for 3.1 bighorns it is 100000 kilometers which is approx 62000 miles or 5 years whichever is sooner |

The instructions say I need to remove the water pump, is this right and if so do I need a new water pump gasket if so will this be in the kit or is it sealed with silicon/instant gasket or some other way? Or can I leave it in situ? _________________ Phil

Cool, I was pretty sure that my mechanic friend didn't when he did the MK1 as I don't remember draining the coolant. That in itself isn't a problem anyway as the rad will be out (new one should be here tomorrow £128 + vat from Northern Radiators in Leeds) I just need to order the cambelt kit and then wait for some decent weather one weekend soon. _________________ Phil

you don`t need to remove the water pump but i would make sure its ok as its easy to change while you are that far in and could save more work later |

|
|
Hi Guys,
I am in the process of changing myseive like water pump & realise half way in there that I need to remove all the timing belt covers to get it out.
So since I have no idea when the belt was changed last & the car has somewhere in the region of 300K (no idea for sure since it was run for a few years before I got it with a dead sender & since then something else has died on the speedo circuit) miles on it, I'm kinda thinking it might be somewhat overdue.
So since my haynes anual does not cover this engine, what do I have to remove? Some say rad, some say not, bottom pulley has to come off to get the cover off but can Idothat with the rad in? Some say air con & steering pumps, some say not..... Any suggestions that reduce the work & risk of sheaed bolts etc would be appreciated!! :/
Thanks in advance guys!
