Hi there,

I recently had my air con recharged and it worked well for a bit, however the air con no longer works  Sad  - its a 1995 3.1

The blue light on the switch comes on but the clutch on the compressor no longer engages.  A few days earlier I heard bubbling on the drivers side so I guess I have a leak but can't see any evidence..... I have checked the fuses and it looks ok. Other than that the truck is ok.

I am not really bothered about having air con and I wanted your thoughts on changing the compressor for an idler pulley and a shorter belt as I don't really want the hassle of trying to fix an ageing system. Is changing the compressor to an idler pulley for a novice? Is there anything else that would need to be sorted? is there a supplier that you could reccomend for parts?

All your help very much appreciated as I don't really want to run the truck with no air con gas as I read this eventually causes the compressor to sieze and strip the belts  Shocked .

Cheers,

Dave

I have one....but I'm keeping it for when not if I need it  Smile  Most breakers have them and its a simple job to do. Only issue is the aircon system needs emptying by a specialist as the contents go and attack the ozone layer. otherwise its 30min job with basic sockets/spanners. 12 and 14mm IIRC

Its a doddle ... just follow the method I used by following Dylans link. Make sure you get everything you need. The two bolts. A washer 5mm thick with an 8.5mm hole in the middle ... or at least a plate 5mm thick with a hole in the middle ... or as a last resort a stack of normal washers that make the spacer size. Get yourself a brand new belt. You want a power steering belt (just the one) for a non-aircon vehicle.

Just to confirm ... the only reason I flipped the adjuster bracket was the belts I had to hand were either too long (aircon belts) or too short (what was given to me with the pulley and had in the garage). If you get the correct belt you don't need to flip the adjuster.

We may need to address the compressor issue on buddy's incoming Trooper project. We're gonna take her in soon after we finished installing the suspension and dually wheels on the Superduty and clear the garage.
