Hello to all Isuzu supporters! I have a 3.0l Trooper that needs handbrake attention. .It seemingly adjusted fine and worked for about 1 day and then it somehow goes back to having no handbrake at all. Have adjusted this before with the same outcome. All help appreciated, has anyone any ideas as to whats causing the problem?

If your adjusting it through the hole in the backplate then maybe the shoes are worn out ?

Thanks for your responses Gribble and TrooperDan. The shoes have a little bit of meat left on them but I often wondered does handbrake shoes ever get fully used cause I have yet to see a half moon shoe wore down to the steel or if I did I cant remember seeing one. It does sound a bit like the slack loosens on the actual handbrake lever on its own TrooperDan but how can it do that.

Here is details of what I did from scratch if it helps:

What I mean is the brakes were holding the 4x4 after adjustment and the handbrake lever in cab was only up to around 3 clicks with a bit of tension while pulling the lever but the next day there is no tension on the handbrake lever and can be pulled up to the last almost but won't hold the 4x4 at all which is back at the way it was before I started again!

Here is what I done and I must admit I know I didn't slacken off the cables which I think I used to always do, my memory fails me a lot, I prob should hav done that shouldn't I?

1. Jacked up rear of vehicle 2. Handbrake left off 3. Removed wheels 4. Removed brake caliper 5. Removed pad/shoe disc 6. Checked shoe wear which seem to have a little bit of use left 7. Cleaned inner part of disc with wire brush 8. Adjusted the toothed adjuster at the bottom of hub till it was slightly tight putting on the disc. 9 Checked for hub/wheel turning freely 10. Slackened of adjuster till wheel/hub turned freely whilst at the same time keeping it as tight as possible to the shoes 11. Checked handbrake lever in cab until I got it holding the hub still at around 3 clicks. 12. Done same thing on other side of 4x4 and both wheels were locking solid when handbrake lever was pulled to around 3 clicks and when let handbrake off the wheels turned freely. The one thing I found strange and have came across a few times before is how the wheel can turn backwards but not forward when handbrake is pulled, surely that cant be right?

No that's not right it should lock the wheel up .

I would say it's a problem with the mechanism in the brake not pushing one of the shoes out properly when the cables pulled.

Also check the cables move ok as Dan says.

When you say that it seems to make sense alright Gribble, I will have to check both shoes are expanding out an even distance on both sides of the hub when I pull the handbrake. I know this will prob sound silly but how will I know the cables are sticking?

Get somebody to pull on the brake end when you have the button in on the handle end ,you should be able to pull the cable right up .

Ok I think I understand. If I disconnect the brake cable from the mechanism in the hub and get someone to hold it with a vice grips or by hand and then if I lift the handbrake handle up it should come up the whole way to the top. So if I cant pull the handbrake handle up while someone is holding/pulling the cable then it's sticking? Am I right or is that what you meant?

The handle comes up all the time no probs but I'm prob not understanding the system properly.

Sort of , you should be able to pull  up and the other fella pull it out when you hold the button in .

Now if you can pull the handle right up and the other fella don't move much the its a cable fault.

I know what you mean now. Didn't get a chance to get back to looking at it yet and the 4x4s needed every day but will get an hour or 2 some of the days to look again hopefully. But this time thanks to yous I have more ammunition to tackle this problem.
I didn't want stripping it all apart and maybe waisting time until I checked on here first just to see if there was a known common problem causing my trouble and with the help of you guys I might be able to fix this a lot easier. When I get checking those things out I will post to let you know how I got on. Please Forgive me if i forget to post as I do have a bad memory! Thanks for your help I appreciate it a lot

Hi Supa trooper and all Tooper owners.I have exactly the same failing hand brake problems as described in your post.
How did you fix this problem as my local garage are scratching their heads without a solution?.
I would take it too Daniel at independent Isuzu but he is 300 miles away!.
Does anyone know of a reliable Trooper specialist down here in Essex?.
