what would happen and when do you dip it when its cold or hot runing or not and how much show i put in if a emtpy it

Should usually be checked when box is hot and engine running. here may be two marks, cold and hot, atf should be topped up to the hot mark when box is hot and engine running.

if there is too much oil it can froth and affect the gear changes

the box holds 8 litres if its on the 3.1td engine but when you drain it you will only get about 4litres out the rest will be in the torque converter and inthe valve block so you should only need 4litres to refill
