PostPosted: Tue May 23, 2006 10:18    Post subject: another oil question Reply with quote

just been out on a 45 mile round trip and noticeing that my oil pressure is not getting up to normal tick over level ie around 28-30 on the dial when warm .

it starts off ok around 55--60 + when cold , but now when warm it is reading about half way between 0 and 30 mark ( approx 15-20 ) when ticking over.

i,ve just checked the oil and the level looks ok ie between the 2 dots ( cooled down , but still warm ).

the engine runs ok , sometimes a bit tappy , but plenty of power.
should i just change the oil , or is there any thing else to look out for.

the engine is the 3.1 TD model , and the oil pressure when warm and at idle is /was allways at the 30 mark.

any thoughts

thanks again .

The idle pressure is nothing to worry about, but keep your eye on it anyway. 3.1s can sound a bit tappy but until it gets loud theres no real need to adjust the clearances.
Change the oil & filter every 3000. Buy a big drum of oil & get filters from Milners.

It's reasonable to be up around 80psi when cold and you will see postings on here with readings down around 15psi when hot, both figures at tickover. Someone quoted Isuzu figures a while back and they were wide open.

When I'm looking to buy an engine, I'm more interested in how quickly from start up (hot & cold) the pressure builds up & how constant it stays. For example one of mine runs at 25psi on tickover 60psi running speed and does that all day long everyday, so I consider that normal. Another never drops below 50psi and will run at 80psi when hot and I consider that normal as well Smile

I would guess the warning light is set at around 5psi so that low on tickover would give me cause for concern but not panic if it went up to 50psi when driving Smile

Just be certain to keep the oil filter changed and use the correct grade of oil at all times.

If it was down to just an oil light, non of these oil pressure threads would be here.
I put it down to to much info for the normal driver Smile

2 points to note hager 10 mm spanner size are 6mm bolt size the correct torque setting is inch pounds not foot pounds or the metric equal you will struggle to get a inch pound torque wrench at handy money.use a quarter drive socket set and just go steady but equal pressure once you have the touch it stays with you Dont put a 10inch bar on em , ickle rachet is enough.

thanks for the help guys but no one actualy gave me the figures....

i would rather do it with a torque wrench as im really nervous about stripping the threads in the sump..

and it's really not cool going to a mechanic and saying "can you please tighten these widdle biddy bolts im a bit scared"
