Guys, I've just replaced my oil burning 90 2.8 engine with a unit a sourced from a converted landrover. I removed the engine with the gearbox in-place. On my first trip out, after about a mile or so, the 4x4 started to slow down, no strange noises or smells, until I loss all drive. The engine seams fine.

However there is no drive via the auto box in any setting, not even the usaul bite when a position is selected . I checked the fluid level in the box, it's ok. During the engine switch, I had to swop flywheels and clutch's. I tightened all the bolts correctly, there was some fluid in the clutch, is this normal? I'm new to automatic's, so need your help. Regards Steve

Welcome to the club Smile

Firstly check the fluid level again with the engine running, and its not a clutch its a torque converter and it does have fluid in it Wink

The fluid is about an inch about the .h. mark when running? I'll drain the fluid and replace with new oil.

I changed the oil and removed the sump, added about 4l to bring into the .H. mark on the dip stick when running.

It still will not make any effort to engage any gear. Anyone any ideas?
Regards steve

I think you may have to fill the torque convertor with ATF before reassembly, also check that the linkages from the selector are actually working and selecting gears at the box as they may have come loose. Are these boxes vacuum modulated in which case you may have a vacuum pipe come loose.

Can anyone time me if the small plate that attches to the flywheel goes behind the plate that attaches to the torque converter?

The small plate (dish shape) is about 70mm wide, the bolts that hold the flywheel pass through it. I may have it on the wrong order, hence the torque converter would not sit fully on the input shaft 6/7mm short.

You could plough through this, but i dont know if it covers the torque converter.
