Hello Guys.

I have a 1992 Bighorn which has the following transmission problem.
When the vehicle is started from cold the speedo does not work and it will not change into top gear also the overdrive will not engage.
After driving for a couple of miles the speedo kicks in and the gearbox and overdrive behave normally.

I recently had to go on a long trip and after about 30 to 40 mins the speedo stopped the overdrive dissengaged and dropped down a couple of gears quite scarey when you are travelling at speed.

Any advice you guys can offer would be most welcome

It is normal for the overdrive not to work till the car warms up so you wont get top gear, but as for the Speedo not working Confused

so either the Speedo is an un related problem are you have a bigger problem starting.

Are there any temp sensors that are linked to the transmission that could be causing this problem.

Or could it be a combination of more than 1 fault I personally was on the lines of the speedo sensor on the side of the box

I'm pretty sure that a faulty speedo head can cause problems such as yours, or as you said the sender on the gearbox.

It could be the speed sensor problem many auto box owners have had and the symptoms include erratic shifting and speedo performance which are linked. It is mounted at the back of the gearbox on the passenger side, 2 different types identifiable buy the number of wires, 2 or 3. Have a look at the threads under "speedo" on this site, there was also a problem where it appears to have been the drive instead of or as well as the sensor.

Not difficult to change, 1 bolt and 1 connector, and get the rear n/s wheel up a bit to save any gearbox oil coming out.

You can get spares from Isuzu/Vauxhall but I think they are expensive at around £250, so a breaker may be the best bet although Troopers weren't sold in the UK with auto option...
