this is simply straght forward to do as there is no timing involved because it is an ohv engine but you need to find out what caused it to blow so like matski said you need to get it off to see whats wrong before you go on , so the next question is in what way did it blow eg does it look damaged in any way , if so i can tell you what to do next ok Smile

How do you know if it's the head gasket without removing the head. What are the symptoms?

ok check the water to see if there is any oil in it and the same with the oil to see if there is water in it .
if thats ok then take off the oil cap and look on the inside off it , now what you are looking for is a brown sluge if not then take off the rad cap off and start the engine and hold the rev's at 1500 and see if the water flows out like a fountin if not then a compresion test , if you dont have one then take it for a compresion test , the tester will tell you whats wrong if you do have on let me know and i will tell you more ok .

Air getting into the cooling system (visibly bubbling)

Consuming allot of water (water crossing over into the cylinder and being burnt)

And the old faithful, water in the oil (gray emulsified oil)

Any one of these or others can be symptoms of a gasket or cracked/warped head.
