1992 3.1 Diesel Manual Trooper 65K miles

On longer journeys the speedo occasionally drops to zero and stays there for between 5 mins and much longer before returning to normal. This does not seem to happen on short trips. Its state is either normal or dead....!
I have removed and checked the sensor for obvious problems, and am working my way along the wiring loom and cleaning any connectors along the way. As the sensor costs about £170 from Isuzu I want to be shure that everything else possible has been checked before replacing the sensor. How does the sensor work and how can it be bench-tested...?

Can anyone offer practical suggestions that may save replacing the part?

Can anyone advise cheap source for this sensor? (Milners cannot help)

Max

Hi Max, and welcome to the madhouse.

Not quite the answer you need, but I have almost the same probs with an elderly Volvo 940, and to avoid silly expense, I've bought a TALEX speed camera etc warning device wich sits on the dash and gives a constant Accurate GPS speed readout,  for about £70.

Its excellent, and updatable, weekly if you wish, via the internet. You can also put your own warning points in by just pressing a button when on the spot.

Look up the details on their website.

Anyone else got one of these?

Dafydd.
