Siezed Water Pump?

Whilst happily trundling down a spanish motorway recently the fan on our '92 3.1 TD BigHorn suddenly appeared to shear off and smash into the radiator. Result was obviously immediate overheat and coolant all over the place! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad A passing mechanic suggested the water pump had siezed and commented "es mucho common on deese cars!"

Wondered if anyone had any experience of this? And if so, what could be the likely damage (car en route from spain now!) - we've had a suggestion that the engine will almost certainly be "cooked" and will need completely replacing!! Shocked
We turned it off before it stopped running so find this a bit hard to believe but not being very technical aren't sure..

this was a common problem on early troopers the shaft would shear and drop the fan through the radiator if not noticed (yes some people didn't) then yes it would cause engine damage. the new water pumps are the modded type and there has been no problems with them
