Ive been looking to buy a trooper bighorn, I have been to test drive an imaculate irmscher model 3.1 td auto. But as it is the first one I have actually driven I am not sure what was wrong.
I set off and tried to pull out of a junction, I put my foot to the floor but it only crawled away very very slowly. The salesman agreed that it was slow & said he would look into it before I come back next time.
I am not sure about all the different modes on the gearbox, could there be a button that was on and should be off ? or could it have been stuck in low ratio ? there were no lights on on the dash by the way, otherwise it seemed ok once it was moving.
Any ideas ?

Can you clarify a couple of points...

1. When you pull away, do the revs climb fast, as if it were in a very low gear or is the engine just sluggish?

2. Does this happen at every pull-away or just when cold?

3. When you are moving, describe how the vehicle behaves over the next, say, 1/4 mile

Sorry for the delay in replying,
Just had it serviced and cambelt replaced. All filters were black as was oil !
engine has been given clean bill of health now, although problem still exists. It does not happen every day just some days, hot or cold.

If you come to do a hill start of any kind it just won't move ! revs do not rise. it is as though it is in too high a gear to set off. If I am lucky it will just about crawl away if i put my foot flat to the floor.
The same happened in reverse the other day, & resulted in my wife not being able to do a 3 point turn. you seem to have to get a run up to get up a hill.
The funny thing is that some days it behaves fine all the time, it isn't the fastest thing setting off, but you can keep up with traffic. then another day it will play up again Once it is moving above 10mph it performs as I would expect ??? any ideas would be appreciated Idea

Sounds like a fuel problem to me - either a blockage in the fuel line, a leak somewhere, or perhaps a faulty pump. Sorry tis may sound obvious but really sounds like a job for a specialist. Go to an independent if you can find one. It may just turn out to be something simple like wax in the tank, easily cured, but I never try to fix things associated with the fuel system (for obvious reasons) and a few quid invested now will reap its reward in the long run. Hope all goes well. Matt.

.....i forgot to ask you in my previous post: If you are trying to pull away and it does its sluggish thing, try depressing the clutch. Do the revs rise as you would expect or do they still stay low? Matt.

Thanks for the advice, It will rev fine in neutral if needed it is only while in drive that this problem appears. With it being an auto this is a bit of a problem ! Some days it behaves fine, other days it does this every time I need to set off from a standstill, if the road is flat or downhill it is not a problem, just when it is uphill. I have it booked in at a 4x4 specialists next week, so hopefully it will get sorted. Cheers

Fixed at last !
been to a diesel specialist and had a full set of new injectors fitted
and it now flies ! also no black smoke. I was confused though as it is only showing 67k kilometers on the speedo, so I dont see how they should have been worn out ? although I did have a big ish leak from one of them.
Anyway I can now drive, and actually overtake if I am feeling in the mood.

Cheers
