Hi there,
I'm from NZ and have had my 1995 Bighorn (i think you guys call this a trooper?) for 4 years and love it to bits!! Took it offroad for the first time in about a year last week and got stuck ALOT!!!   Confused   One of the guys that I was with noticed that the front wheels weren't driving. I have no 4X4 light in my dash when I put it into 4h or 4l in the transfer box but the light does go when I turn my ignition on. Have had mechanic look into this and he thinks it could be something electric as it is turning the front drive shaft but not the wheels. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on or have a copy of the wiring diagram? No one here seems to know and I cant get a workshop manual for love nor money!!!
Many thanks
Claire  Very Happy

It sounds like you either have manual front locking hubs or if they are auto, then they aren't locking up and may need stripping down, clening & regreasing.

As Mart says dodgy hubs are one reason, but another common problem is the vacuum pipes and solenoids that control the 4WD engagement can become corroded/disconnected over time, and the clue is that you have no 4WD symbol lighting up on the dash (although that could have come disconnected at the gearbox end) If you face the vehicle at the front and then look underneath at the front axle, to the right of centre there should be a metal cover on the axle and underneath this the 4WD gubbins. Have a root around and make sure all connections are good. Start there, this is probably the most common fault and cheapest to fix! Smile

If all OK there, then proceed to hubs...

Being a '95 model you might also have SOTF (Shift on The Fly) but the same basic reasons for non operation applies.

Let us know what happens....

Rabbit knows this one  Laughing

First time he went off road he didn't realise his motor had manual front wheeling hubs, because they are hidden behind the centre cap of the front wheels. If these are in the 4x2 position then the front halfshafts will turn, but be disconnected fron the drive flange at the wheel.
I'd check that first before doing anything else.

Good point and would that also affect the 4WD warning light on the dash?

Nope it wouldnt, if the light is playing up i would go for the wiring over the axle.

Yes, but to check if the hubs are locked is a 2 minute job  8)
