Should I be worried, 1989 Trooper, petrol, says about 3/4 way up guage, just under the red. I changed the thermostat, fluid looks good, water level is good, fan is working. 75 degrees here in NC USA.
Any ideas? Thanks |

On most cars 1/2 to 3/4 is normal, if the needle doesnt go into the red i wouldnt worry about it. _________________ |

Double check the connection on the sender unit. Remove cable, clean terminal thoroughly & re-fit. Quick free repair if it turns out to be the problem Fingers crossed. _________________ 1994 KZJ70 Cruiser (currently filling the garage and causing some head scratching)

I own a 96 Trooper and when I drive, the engine is cool(1/4-1/2), but when I stop, the dial goes toward Hot(3/4-Hot). Fluid levels are good. What could be the problem? |

The problem with an engine driven cooling fan (assuming thats what the petrols have) is that it cools the most when you need it least and vice versa. Initially I'd check and clean all the connectiosn to the sender and maybe replace it as they're pretty cheap. I'd rverse flush the radiator and engine with a hosepipe until the water runs clear and then refill with the appropriate mix of coolant and water and see what that does. If it becomes a problem and a test on the head gasket is negative for any problems then I'd consider either changing to an electric fan or fitting a secondary electric one to use when the weather is hot and you're idling or towing etc. This could be mounted as a pusher in front of the rad and just operated via a relay from a simple switch in the cab. _________________ Phil

Could be a possible issue with the viscous fan (if fitted), may be spinning up, just not fast enough (as in slipping), so there is a cooling effect, just not enough.
Sorry I can't remember how to check viscous fans....

Be careful though, if you catch your hand in it, it can be quite vicious.... _________________ 1999 Cougar with a NICE motor..
