Have a '93 3.1td with 95000mls on the clock. Just recently the temp guage has started playing up; the needle used to sit at around the 1/4 mark but now it will jump up to red then back down after a minute or two no matter the driving conditions, also the heater pumps out hot air when on the move but not when sitting idling, also the vehicle never overheats and drives fine. My first port of call is to change the thermostat, then after that not sure. Could the head gasket or the head itself be on the way out?
Your help is appreciated. thanks. |

Firstly welcome
Yup the stat is the prime suspect, also the rad could be starting to block up.
I very much doubt its the head to be honest. _________________ |

if the temp gauge moves to hot and the back again in a short time it may be the thermostat playing up it could also be the temp sender unit or the gauge itself as you say the engine doesn`t overheat
as for the heater being hot when moving and not when idling its possible that the heater fan is not working on the other hand it could be that the radiator is semi blocked also the heater radiator may be semi blocked restricting the flow |

Had a similar sounding issue which was the sender. It's probably the cheapest and easiest to try 1st.
One of my Fronteras was exactly the same as regards warm air at tickover. That eventually turned out the be airlocks and was remedied after cleaning heater rad, but not until it had burst a heater pipe!! _________________ 1994 KZJ70 Cruiser (currently filling the garage and causing some head scratching)
