If its what i think it is i wouldnt play with it,
Its the fast warm up, its closes flaps in the inlet and exhaust to choke the engine into heating up quicker and they stick closed "A Lot"  Shocked

Disconnect it at the back.

Very Happy It is called an AMBIENT temprature switch, like the other member said it is for really cold weather conditions. I've got it on my 3.1D but i dont think it is neccesary in the uk

Hey I have one on my Monterey. You're right it is the cold warm up. Is a light supposed to come on when it is working? Which is on and which is off. May sound daft but if the switch is pressed down at the front is that on or off? It helps to know becuase I don't want anything sticking if it doesn't need sticking.

I learn something everyday.

I believe the system will only work at ambient temperatures well below anything we have had here in the Uk for a few years. It WILL light up if it is cold enough if that makes sense. If it is already warm, pushing the button will not activate it, so obviously it works off a sensor.

But, as everyone has said, best not to touch it.

We have a member on here in Canada that has to use it it temperatures of - 25 C so it does have it's uses, but not here...

Well I might have to use it. At the moment I am working in the UK but moved to Spain last year. Now stop laughing because I am not on the sunny coasts of Marbella and Costa Blanca but in the mountains. OK so in summer it gets to 48c but in winter it gets to -15c and a foot of snow. No I am serious. Talk about extremes. So when I go back in September to live there permanently I may need that button that you don't touch. Meanwhile I wil leave well alone.
Greta advice.

The system is activated when the switch is in.  The green light only comes on if the ambient outside temperature is below about 10.5 degrees and the engine is cold.

If in doubt - disconnect it.  The exhaust butterfly isn't easy to get at if it gets stuck.
