How long does it flash for? Mine will flash until the actual mechanical items have disengaged.

If you are driving along when you disengage the 4wd the light will flash as Chris says.  If you continue to "drive" the car it will not disengage, this will happen when you take your foot off the accelerator or press the clutch.  All the time the driveline is under power it will not unlock.

i usually stop an go into reverse and that disengages it

Sorry rubbish explanation, you don't have to stop, just ease off the throttle or press the clutch.
