My 3.1 Monetery starts without problem aboput 9 times out of 10..But on the odd occasion the starter makes a loud screech.and just flies round without turning the engine..is it the starter bendix or is it the ring gear..Can anyone tell me how to tell which it is..The vehicle has only done a genuine 87,000 from new
Cheers

Clutch on the starter on a 3.1? Are you sure about that?

Mine does the same when it's cold and it's the batteries being a little past their best and spinning up the motor before the pre-engage flicking out.

at £150 for swapping the batteries I've gone for the 1 in 10 spinning out of the starter Wink

yes there is a type of clutch of sorts on them and it's this that slips when you get the noise of the starter just spinning. the pre-engaged starter is exactly that it is pre-engaged with the ring gear before it starts to spin to reduce damage to both starter and ring gear. so as it's already engaged if the clutch on the starter is weak then the force needed to turn the engine is greater than the clutch can apply so the starter slips which is the spinning noise you can hear.

When I had my starter apart, it was a stright (planetory i think) gear onto the benedix on the pre-engage. Was there a specific year when they brought a clutch in??

Had starter motor fitted today and everything is back to normal...The original unit was rated as 2.8 kilowatt but the new one was rated at 2.3 kilowatt..Spoke to Milners and they assured me that the one they sent was fine and sure enough it works perfectly
Cheers
