I've been looking at 1999 3.0 TD troopers, but on talking to people I have gotton a sense that the early 3.0 TD engine is a bit suspect, which can result in costly turbo and cylinder sleve replacement. Is this the case or are the people I've talked to just unlucky lemon owners???

Any info on the 1998 - 1998 models welcome.

Thanks
Ed.

Hi Ed.

I bought a 1998 3.1 import 6 months ago, it is down on power heavy on fuel and smokes badly have spoken with isuzu dealer and deisel specialist in hampshire and have not yet found a garage with diagnostic equipment to find the fault. am told the problem is that 1998 import models have electronic fuel pumps and cannot be changed to mannual. my advice would be to steer clear of import model of that year.

If anyone knows of a garage that can do a diagnostic test on my vehicle I would be grateful for their contact details.

We have a 3.1td and been told by an isuzu employee that they are one of the best engines but to steer clear of 3.0 as they have been having problems, not as good.

Have you tried Proven at Haselmere yet. They have the technology BUT as I discovered import models are NOT programmed into the UK diagnostic system as Isuzu UK ask dealers to avoid working on imports. The settings on imports seem to differ from UK supplied vehicles. I heard a rumour that it dates back a few years to when a main dealer adjusted something on an import and it blew the engine. Very big bill which Isuzu 'picked up' but then stopped other dealers from falling into the same trap.

i bought a 99 3.0td with 56k miles and 3yrs 2 months old, it was from main dealers and had had a new engine i was told. it came with a full years warranty. they told me to keep an eye on everything and if any probs let them know. i must point oout that i cover some 100k m iles a year and my old 2.8 had done 420k miles with only a new gear box(except brakes tyres etc)within a month the oil light came on and the dealers said there was no leak and the levels where ok.then the turbo blew due the oil pipe splitting, they told me to drive it home!!!!( from plymouth to lincoln)
any way after 10 months of recurring faults, leaks, rattles and bangs the engine blew again(cylinder head and walls cracked)but the warrenty company wanted to send off all components to be x rayed (4 weeks) and what do i do for work??
by chance the dealers had a demo vehicle which they did me a good deal on (53 plate)and i said goodbye to the first 3.0 vehicle for good. the new vehicle has covered 15kmiles in 3 months and has been fautless

I brought my 3.0TD new just over 2 years ago. Am becoming a bit concerned by the horror stories on this site!

When I brought it I had heard nothing but praise for the new engine, and read about how reliable it was! So far mine has covered 48,000 miles without any problems, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed now.

It has however proven to be powerful, v.smooth (with Auto box) and give a constant 29 mpg, even when pushed on motorways.

My mate with a new discovery even remarked on how good and quiet it seemed in comparison with his, when I gave him a lift up the motorway!
