Bought my diesel 3.1 yesterday. Can't work out what's supposed to happen with the wee switch with a picure of an engine and a coil. I guess this is for glow-plugs, but the lamp only lights after the engine has started. Can some kind person tell me what the starting sequence should be? When does the switch need to be pressed?
Thanks. |

The switch you are referring too is the fast warm up switch. It closes a flap in the exhaust to basically strangle the engine making it work harder and warm up quicker. It only works below I think 5C. Its a great idea in principle but in practice as it wets used so infrequently in our climate it has a habit of the flap sticking shut so causing a loss of power and black smoke.
My normal start up sequence in cold weather is to crank a few turns onto the fast idle knob (mines a 98 and its to the right of the steering column) glow the plugs a couple of times by moving the ignition key to the first position when the little yellow light with a picture of a coil lights up and then repeatimng when it goes off and then start it. Adjust the fast idle control to get a nice smooth idle around the 1K revs mark, leave for a couple of minutes, back the idle back dfown and drive off. My 98 3.1 doesn't have a fast warmup switch although my 91 MK1 did. _________________ Phil

Cold warm up sequence on mine.
Put key in ignition > wait for glows to go out > Start engine. After running for 5 seconds blip the accelerator, turn on the heating to full (to increase the revs) put on the rear demist, mirror heaters, and blowers on the wind screen.
Scrape windows, get back into hot car.
I've never had any problems starting in cold (other than a slight starter motor issues (but hey...) ), and that's a 95 3.1 _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

My procedure is:
Turn ign on, wait 5 secs after glow plug light goes off, switch ign off, repeat again and start. Rev to get the volts up then crank up the idle control to about 1000 rpm, turn hearter up full, switch heated rear screen, heated mirrors and heated seats on, scrape windows, slacken off idle control, drive off. _________________ 94 Big Horn 3.1 Lotus Auto

Mine was very hard to start today, had to crank it over three or four times before it caught. I think I may have had some diesel waxing as I haven't used it since sunday and its very cold up here and where its parked it doesn't get the sun at the moment until about midday so it was well frozen up. Been down to -9C here recently. After that initial startup its been fine. _________________ Phil
