So this one is to make you all laugh a little, I had a vehicle to pick up in Accrington today and remember I live near Aylesbury so me ant the trooper hitched up to the trailer and set off, went 150 miles at 60 mph without the guage moving a bit then whoosh, without warning, all the way up.. so I put the kenlowe fans on for the next 2 hours, not noticing the volt guage dropping! So I get to accrington with the temp guage knocking on the end stop, I stopped the trooper to load my pickup and then it wouldn't start, to battery was flattened by the kenlowes, ever had a bad feeling that you bought a pup? So after a jump start I had a 45mph 250 mile drive with the temp guage stuck to the top. It did get so hot that it started kicking steam/water out the top of the header but after dropping the trailer it was like it never had a problem. So, I am thinking that its a new double row rad, TS and alternator!! I am taking the rad out tomorrow, will let you know what I find...

I'd say rad (and alternator Wink ) once the engine is working hard, the rad is unable to cool quick enough....

Just to update you all, I found a local rad company and they said they would re core my rad for £130 so I took out the old rad and it was only when dry you could see the tubes inside are completely caked in scale all the pipes are blocked and it was not coolin at all, so I will have the new one back tomorrow and have a job booked from eastbourne to Aylesbury monday, will tell you how it goes..

Smile  Smile  Smile Hi to everyone, so I put the new rad in but I could not find a new thermostat but I put the old one in the pan of boiling (nearly) water and it opened about 8 mm so I went with it.  Happy to say, I collected a brand new ST Ford in eastbourne and took it back to aylesbury and the guage did not move a bit (sorry chris) the only question I have left is, can I use the OEM temp sensor to trigger the kenlowes?
Happy from Aylesbury .. Very Happy  Very Happy

Sooo... back on the topic of Jonof's motor  Laughing  Another one fixed by a simple rad change  Rolling Eyes  looks like its becoming quite a common problem. One to watch out for I guess  Cool

Jonof, it depends which temp sensor, if it's for the gauge then no because it doesn't switch it just varies the resistance to make the gauge move.  If there is another on that just switches you can use the output to run a relay.

I think the best is the X-Switch that goes into the top hose on an alloy billet and has 2 switches in it, you can either one or both depending on the fans.  They have some good wiring diags to show how to configure them for your needs, including an off with hot temp light incase you forget to switch them back on after off-roading.

Scaling can be easily and relatively cheaply avoided by mixing antfreeze with distilled water, rather than tap water.
